Education

School always came easy to me, I never had to worry about passing classes as long as I showed up and did my work. College was never really on my mind, the reason for that is, I never thought I would be able to produce good grades like I have in high school. A couple major factors that changed my thought about attending college, is I had mentors believing in me and telling me I am smart enough to get a degree. I love wrestling, and I knew if I wrestled in college I would meet all kinds of new people and coaches that would always have my back. I almost wanted to start a new life so I decided to attend a college that was far away from my hometown. I chose to go to college to better myself, for a number of reasons.

I have always had a few coaches and teachers behind me, giving me a sense of direction. Now that I am older I realized they were all pushing me to do my best, whether it was for applying for scholarships, or checking out different career options. One day after school my coach told me to come to his room, he sat me down and we talked about college. Soon we came across the three best options for me and I chose the one I wanted. I did not really know much about Rochester Community and Technical College, but I always put lots of trust into my coach, so I was positive I had made the right decision.

The sport of wrestling has opened up a whole world of opportunities for me, not only for wrestling, but education along with it. Rochester offered me a spot on the wrestling team with it’s amazing coaches. It has also provided me with many new interactions with people that I will network with for much of my life. I love being a part of the college. It really helps me get to know people and their different cultures, along with making all kinds of new friends. I have been in college for seven months, but I know I have made connections with great people that will last me a lifetime.

I became very bored of my hometown, I do not know if it was from being there for too long, or myself just wanting something different. I was growing out of my small town of 1,100 people and wanted more action. Many people questioned my idea of going to a college so far away from home. I was very skeptical about it. My friends told me we would not see each other often and that when I moved to college I would know absolutely no one. They definitely were right. I did miss them and I knew no one.

After being at Rochester Community and Technical College for about seven months, I realized my mentors throughout high school were right. The school work is not that hard and I am passing my classes. I have made new and better friends while still staying in touch with my old ones. Wrestling has been the best year of my career. My team is the best and I love every one of them. My decision to go to college had lots of factors, but I went and it was possibly the best decision I have ever made.
