Course Reflection

Reflection

I have always been good at putting words on paper, but I’ve never been good at grammar. I never had an English class like this where we were able to write about pretty much anything, we wanted which was awesome. As this class stated I was a little overwhelmed with all the writing I had to do but Bonnie made it very easy to accomplish with her weekly checkpoints. I knew college English was going to be harder than high school, so I had to make sure to show up and get my work done. Which I did until the virus hit then it was not very easy to complete the blog posts. I believe I was more engaged then a lot of the class which is normal for me. This class made me think about things way more critically like in a way I have never thought of. I also think this class made me smarter in general.

“School always came easy to me, I never had to worry about passing classes as long as I showed up and did my work. College was never really on my mind, the reason for that is, I never thought I would be able to produce good grades like I have in high school. A couple major factors that changed my thought about attending college, is I had mentors believing in me and telling me I am smart enough to get a degree. I love wrestling, and I knew if I wrestled in college I would meet all kinds of new people and coaches that would always have my back. I almost wanted to start a new life so I decided to attend a college that was far away from my hometown. I chose to go to college to better myself, for a number of reasons.

I have always had a few coaches and teachers behind me, giving me a sense of direction. Now that I am older I realized they were all pushing me to do my best, whether it was for applying for scholarships, or checking out different career options. One day after school my coach told me to come to his room, he sat me down and we talked about college. Soon we came across the three best options for me and I chose the one I wanted. I did not really know much about Rochester Community and Technical College, but I always put lots of trust into my coach, so I was positive I had made the right decision.

The sport of wrestling has opened up a whole world of opportunities for me, not only for wrestling, but education along with it. Rochester offered me a spot on the wrestling team with it’s amazing coaches. It has also provided me with many new interactions with people that I will network with for much of my life. I love being a part of the college. It really helps me get to know people and their different cultures, along with making all kinds of new friends. I have been in college for seven months, but I know I have made connections with great people that will last me a lifetime.

I became very bored of my hometown, I do not know if it was from being there for too long, or myself just wanting something different. I was growing out of my small town of 1,100 people and wanted more action. Many people questioned my idea of going to a college so far away from home. I was very skeptical about it. My friends told me we would not see each other often and that when I moved to college I would know absolutely no one. They definitely were right. I did miss them and I knew no one.

After being at Rochester Community and Technical College for about seven months, I realized my mentors throughout high school were right. The school work is not that hard and I am passing my classes. I have made new and better friends while still staying in touch with my old ones. Wrestling has been the best year of my career. My team is the best and I love every one of them. My decision to go to college had lots of factors, but I went and it was possibly the best decision I have ever made.”

Most Confident

Above is the 4th essay that I wrote, it is about education and why it’s important to me. I chose this whole essay because It allowed me to write it about myself and I think when I’m able to do that I become a better writer. I do not have to research a topic and learn it, then write a whole essay on it. I am also much more interested in writing about myself. So the whole essay just made me feel confident about what I was writing.

“Every sport in the world today will require some sort of mental preparation. That is if you want to be good at that particular sport. You can just wake up and go practice everyday and then play on Saturdays and not think a damn thing about it. Now if you want to be great at the sport you play, you need to think and  apply yourself to it and take away something from it each and every day. A Person who does these mental preparations each and everyday will not only have an edge over other athletes but an edge over other people in life. They will do the same things as others, but they will take away lessons from it unlike the people who just wake up and go through their day.”

Proudest Moment

The paragraph above is one of my essays titled, “Why Play Sports?” This is my proudest moment because all my life, sports impacted me the most, they taught me many different life lessons. They got me to where I am right now. I just believe that if you play sports things in life will be easier. There are many different reasons for that listed in the essay.

Things I Have Learned

The things that I gained from this course are based upon looking at things a different way. I have learned to look at readings through many different perspectives and how someone else would feel about it. This will help me in life, because it will give me a sense of how other people are feeling. Another good thing I learned about the course is, how to make a plan to complete an essay in one week. This is always something I knew how to do but never that often like each week. This will help me in just about anything throughout my life that is important to me.

Nutrition’s Importance to Athletes

Athletes and nutrition have gone hand in hand with each other since the beginning of professional athletes, and when I say since the beginning I mean ancient roman era. Gladiators, huge, burly beasts among men actually turned out to be vegan according to their remains. Now, why do I mention that, because they were the pinnacle of human health for their time and they knew even way back then that diet was key to the ability to perform. For the most part, people who don’t understand what it takes to be an athlete believe that they can basically eat whatever they want as long as the workouts are intense enough, but from experience and with a basic understanding of physiology you’d see that performance, while influenced by the work you put in, more so influenced by diet.

The reason the diet of an athlete is so crucial is due to the fuel and recovery aspect. Food, when digested, provides crucial nutrients for recovery after a training session, and if you eat a food that is easily digestible and provides you with your macros needed, such as protein, fiber, carbs, and fats, you’ll be able to recover quicker and get back to training faster. Not only that but in order to actually get in a workout, you need energy and that comes from simple and complex carbs that your body burns in order to provide energy to your muscles to work hard. The better quality fuel you provide to your muscles, organs, and brain the harder you can work, and the faster you can get back to training.

Now while the exact foods that you should eat to fuel up properly are not concrete and usually vary from person to person, there are definitely foods that are universally accepted as healthy choices and ones that are not held in such high esteem. Foods that are usually incorporated most healthy diets such as avocados have 64 calories, 3.4 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fiber, and a whopping 6 grams of fat, as well as 20 vitamins and minerals, and not in a whole avocado, just in one-fifth of one according to the USDA National Nutrient Database. Now not every fruit is as quite the whole package as an avocado doesn’t mean they can’t be beneficial. Bananas, for example, are a good source of natural sugar and potassium to prevent cramps. Now processed meats, chips, fried food, sweets, and sugary drinks all taste good, but they can lead to all sorts of medical issues if eaten frequently such as blood clots, heart disease, diabetes, heart attacks, sleep apnea, and obesity, just to name a few, which is why true athletes tend to avoid them or just eat on a rare occasion. Not only do those kinds of foods cause various health complications but also just fitness drawbacks too, faster heart rate, shortness of breath, and overheating just to name a few drawbacks. The reasoning for most athletes’ diet choices is quite clear to me.

The cleaner you eat the better you’ll perform. Humans are essentially machines and food is our fuel. You wouldn’t put regular gas in a Rolls Royce, so why would an athlete put greasy, sugary junk food in their bodies. It does the body no good and the alternative, being healthier and tastier in most cases, is also usually cheaper. Your body will thank you for eating healthy and you’ll definitely have infinitely more energy than you would otherwise. Eventually, athletes just crave healthy food choices and it’s for a good reason.

Unhealthy Nutrition

It starts with just one candy bar or soda and next its one a day then it’s an addiction to sweets. It’s so easy to get on a bad nutritional track. Human bodies want the things that taste so good even though they are harmful to our bodies and wellbeing. Unhealthy nutrition can impact the human body and mind in so many ways. Negative effects are seen widely and prove why healthy nutrition is important for everyone regardless of age, gender, or race.

Nutrition is important starting with people’s bodies. Bad nutrition has a major effect on our bodies. Eating chips, candy, and other junk food can cause horrendous damage to our bodies. The United States is the most obese country in the world and that has part to do with how unhealthy Americans eat. Obesity is a major problem that needs to be tackled. People need to stop eating such highly processed and artificial foods. Enough with the high sugar and salt. We need natural foods for our bodies. Healthy food like lean meats and green vegetables. The more natural the better. There are so many artificial foods that people eat so commonly and don’t even stop to think about the effects. We need to stop putting so much unhealthy stuff in front of people to change this. It’s hard with all the advertisements out there that show people enjoying these unhealthy foods. Another health issue from unhealthy foods is diabetes. Diabetes is something that can change your life forever. It’s not easy and even less fun. Having to take insulin and always check your blood for sugar levels. To stop this from getting any worse people need to start eating healthier. It just takes a few small steps to make a world of change. Another health effect that are caused by poor nutrition is high blood pressure. High blood pressure is hard on your body. It puts you at risk of clogging your arteries and having a heart attack. All of these are things that can be avoided with better nutrition and keep people’s bodies healthier.

Furthermore, eating unhealthily can affect your emotions and mind as well. Its been proven that people who eat more junk food are lazier and less motivated than those who eat healthy. Those who eat unhealthy also have less energy and feel more depressed. They then eat more unhealthy food when feeling down and it turns into a cycle. Eating healthy can make you happier and give you more energy which lasts longer. Eating healthier foods also stimulates your brain immensely more than unhealthy junk foods. Our brains are one of our biggest assets as humans, why waste them by not allowing them to reach their potential? One of the most insightful facts is that people who consume more unhealthy foods are surprisingly less happy. Happiness is something we as humans thrive for. That dopamine that releases during happiness is a natural pleasure people crave. Eating healthier can make the difference is someone’s whole attitude.  Eating better and taking care of our mental state is just as important as our physical bodies.

People only get one life, so why not make it the best possible one? The start is eating healthier and more nutritious. A change needs to happen now, and it all starts with making changes in our everyday lives. Eat a better breakfast, get a more well-balanced diet, or be more active.

Change isn’t always easy but in the long run it will be for the better.  People will physically and mentally be better off with better nutrition and healthier lifestyles.

Sport Nutrition

Wrestling

Nutrition plans are a crucial part of many sports. Wrestling requires you to stick to a strict plan throughout most of the year. You have a preseason diet and an in-season diet. Although this sounds tricky it’s surprisingly enough easy to stick to once you get into a routine. Staying on these plans and eating the right things help wrestlers compete much better and achieve the most success.

Preseason diets are very important to get your body back into wrestling shape. During this time, you want to lean your body out and get down to the weight you can best perform at. The first thing is cutting out junk food and pop or any other junk with additives and sugars your body doesn’t need. You need to be fueling your body with the right things to give it the best results. In the morning some eggs with some sort of meat to get your protein, preferably lean white meats. For lunch a salad or wrap with lots of vegetables. You can have chicken, lettuce, spinach, green or red peppers, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots and try to stay away from dressings. Dressings are filled with lots of fats which is what you are trying to get rid of. For dinner grilled chicken breasts, grilled potatoes, and more vegetables. These meals will give you good nutrients and energy while also cutting out the bad stuff your body doesn’t need. You should also drink a ton of water throughout the day. Water is a natural diuretic that will clean out your body of bad crap and keep everything moving through you. Additionally, you should get a few workouts in throughout the day to start leaning your body out and getting rid of extra fats you put on during the off season. A run in the morning is a great way to get your body up and going. Then a practice or workout in the afternoon is good for this.

During the season your diet doesn’t change too much from preseason. Your body should be in better shape now and down close to your competition weight. The real trick is to keep up on your diet and workouts, so you don’t fluctuate your weight so much during each week. Ballooning your body up after a weekend weigh in and then cutting 10 or more pounds every week is harsh on your body. Eggs in the morning with some spinach mixed in is a great first meal of the day. For lunch a salad just like the preseason, maybe a little smaller portion though. In the evening some chicken breast and veggies are a perfect recovery meal if your weight is where it needs to be. The most important part of the diet during wrestling season is probably water. You need to get your body plenty of water, so you have energy and your body keeps working properly. Some people cut out their water too early and get very bad cramps or plateau their weight before they are at their competition weight. A good starting point is a gallon a day until the day before weigh ins. If you decide to water load your body correctly it works very well. A commonly used water loading schedule for a normal week is simple. Say weigh-ins are on a Saturday, drink two gallons Monday, a gallon and a half on Tuesday, a gallon on Wednesday, a half-gallon on Thursday, and a quarter gallon on Friday. During the season most wrestlers will get a morning workout in whether it be a short run, quick lift, or something else. The morning workout to get your body going is crucial when cutting weight. They also have practice in the afternoons and then a workout in the evening, usually a run. Another great thing to help your body and mind during the season is visualization matches in your head. Preparing your mind is important to help you gain confidence in your wrestling skills. When laying in bed at night close your eyes and visualize wrestling an opponent and the moves you will do. Visualize winning the match. These are the things wrestlers do in season to be in the best possible position for success.

Wrestling is a very hard sport but doing the right things can help make it easier. Fueling your body and mind with the right things makes cutting weight and being ready to compete so much easier. Therefore, wrestlers start with preseason diets and stick with them during the season. These are a few keyways to perform the best while having your body feeling the best.

Nutrition

How to be healthy is a question people have asked about for generations. Most people want to be healthy, but don’t know where to start.  The truth is nutrition is a great place to begin being healthy. There are so many positive effects through being more nutritious. People get healthier, feel better, and have more energy. Nutrition is something that can also be much simpler than many think and makes all the difference. It just takes a few easy steps to change a person’s life forever.

Getting healthier through a more nutritious diet is just one positive impact of nutrition. A good way to start this is by planning meals and making sure the body gets everything it needs in proportionate amounts. Getting the body all the proper nutrients, it needs from the food groups will do wonders making a person healthier. The human body is meant to eat certain amounts of each food group that help it achieve peak performance. In addition to this a person could take vitamins or other supplements to get the right amount of nutrients to their body. Often it can be hard to eat enough for the body to get everything it needs which is where these supplements come in. Shakes and smoothies with different supplements and ingredients are a good substitute when unable to get the body the proper nutrition through normal meals. These are just a few ways to use nutrition to get a healthier body.

When getting proper nutrition through diet and exercise people feel better. Studies have shown that people who are more nutritious feel happier, and better about themselves. Eating healthy through proper nutrition helps the body work easier and better. In turn this makes people feel physically, emotionally, and mentally better. They can do more physically, their emotions become more positive and their mental state gets happier. Being healthier through better nutrition just makes people feel better and more confident all around. This is one thing many people overlook when talking about nutrition and the value of it. It is certainly surprising when really looking at the data and how much happier people are when being healthier through proper nutrition. People who felt down, and unmotivated that switched up their diets were shown to have positive results in terms of mood, happiness, and energy. This is another reason nutrition is important to bettering the human body and mind.

Many people feel they don’t have enough energy to get through an entire day of work or whatever activities they are doing. They feel tired and wore down sometimes as early as lunch time. Having a more nutritious diet gives people much more energy. All the vitamins and nutrients people get from a healthier diet and better meals gives them loads of energy. People find themselves being much more productive and energetic when getting in a more nutritious lifestyle. The proper diet is an easier way to get more energy and not hard to do. Once in a pattern is becomes easier and easier to stay with it. Putting the proper thing in your body rather than junk food gives you that long lasting energy it needs to work harder, longer. Finding a way to be healthier, and getting proper nutrition is sure to give someone the energy they need for whatever life throws their way.

People want to achieve these things whether for some its only one of these or others all three, but nutrition is where it all begins. Proper nutrition is easy and so valuable to changing a person’s whole lifestyle for the better by getting healthier, feeling better, and having more energy. The best way is to start today rather than push it off. There is no better day to start bettering yourself than today. Take small steps if you have to, but in the end your body and mind will be better off.

Simple Nutrition

I thought I knew quite a bit about nutrition and what certain foods do to your body, that is until I actually took some classes on it and read some informational articles on nutrition. I have learned over the years that there are many different views on which food is the right one for the right situation. What a person does everyday plays a huge factor in nutrition, and people sometimes use uncommon methods to produce the shape of their body. Nutrition has also advanced tremendously over the past 100 years.

Let’s take breakfast as example, everyone eats breakfast at some time of the day. One person could eat oatmeal every morning and they would be full for about three hours and have enough energy to stay motivated. The same person could eat cereal with milk for breakfast every day and feel hungry and groggy about an hour later. Oatmeal is rich in fiber and has a lot of carbs per serving which stores energy for the body to use. Cereal usually has a decent amount of carbs but most of them are from sugar which only keeps you feeling full for a shorter period of time. They are both pretty healthy foods, but oatmeal is a better option.

Someone that is an athlete for most teens they will need more of certain things like protein, carbs, calories, and fats. The athlete does not necessarily need more of any of these things during the day, but if he or she is eating the right amount of each they will physically feel better during any form of sports. Kind of like what was stated before, what you eat throughout the day matters greatly on how you feel and preform. On the flip side of that, someone who is fifty years old, works from home, and runs daily to exercise will not need as much protein, carbs, fats, and calories to perform their tasks without feeling rundown. Due to the fact that an athlete’s body demands more food in order to keep up with their life and the older person does not need nearly as much calories and etc.

Dieting is hard especially when you are a super busy college student who is always on the run. In the long run consistency in a diet will show you the best results. If you eat healthy foods daily one or two choices of “bad” food will not hurt your performance or shape. People are always different so someone’s techniques might not be to appealing for one person and the next might think it’s the best for their body.

Technology

Technology and media has provided many wonderful things to the new generations in this world. Have you ever heard the saying “too much of a good thing is bad?” I believe that this is becoming more and more true with technology. These days young adults are so glued to a screen, they miss out on lots of real world events. On top of that, your devices listen to you way more than you could ever think. People with a good understanding of what technology does, understand that it is only as bad for you as you want it to be. Nowadays we cannot let technology get too far into our heads.

Phones listen in to what you say while on apps and process that information and later turn it into ads on social media apps. This really makes a person think about what our phones are really listening in for, maybe there is a higher power, which takes all this information to sort it out and find what they want. One more reason that is not so bad could be something takes all of these words and process them to see what the people want in order to make a better society. Does not matter which one you believe, you should be careful what you say while using apps on any device.

Young adults spend many hours of the day on their phone, whether it is for gaming, social media, work, or just because they are bored. A very good example of this would be, I was at the state wrestling tournament this past weekend. As I sat down to watch the semi finals, which are a huge part of the tournament, I noticed a couple teenagers sitting by me that were on their phone the whole time (about five hours). It is not very cheap to get in, they missed lots of excitement throughout those five hours, just because of phones. I hope that is not becoming the new norm of sporting events.

In the upcoming years technology will only get more advanced and be more available in many forms to many more people. The years will go by and people will struggle to connect with reality, it will become easier to stay on devices for longer periods of time. Who knows if it will make society better or worse, again it will be very vital to monitor your time on social media and have the understanding on which times it’s acceptable to be on your device or not. I believe as people get older they will know the good and bad things of the new technology.

Education

School always came easy to me, I never had to worry about passing classes as long as I showed up and did my work. College was never really on my mind, the reason for that is, I never thought I would be able to produce good grades like I have in high school. Reading Strategies

Have you ever been reading a novel or short story and notice your mind spacing to a different thought other then the words you are currently reading? Do not worry, it happens all the time to many people, but here are some tips and tricks to help you keep focused on the work. Lots of informational stories will have many confusing parts, that is why it’s important to stop and reanalysis those certain parts of the writing. Many people have their own way of interpreting things such as real world problems along with forms of retaining information, therefore it is important to put everything you earn into your own words. Authors have a strange way of giving information through the text. Sometimes it is difficult to put two and two together, so having a little bit of background knowledge on the article is always beneficial. It is almost like you have to “jump” into the work you are reading.

You can use your schemata to provide the best understanding of any readings. Intelligent people have lots of schemata and use it to help them in many ways. That is the reason behind why people know so much about what stories are based upon, such as an english teacher would engage and understand this piece of writing better then students would. Having more knowledge in general will provide you with more power to comprehend readings.

Humans learn things in many different ways and have even more ways of thinking and solving problems. Making it very key to put paragraphs you do not understand very well into your own words. There are lots of ways to solve math problems, while some individuals might prefer to solve them a certain way. Others might find it simpler to solve them in a similar but different way. Finding your own ways to better understand confusing parts of a reading by putting them into your own words will make reading much easier.

Slowing things down will always make pieces of work easier to comprehend. While you read difficult parts of an article you may need to slow down and reread many parts of the story, especially if the story is about a topic you have background knowledge about. I was reading the article for this paper and there were multiple times I had to slow down and take a breath and try to understand the topic clearly. Sometimes I will have to reread it three to four times, which helped me a lot. Always make sure to stop and take your time with topics that are hard to understand, it will always be worth it in the end.

Everyone, no matter age or level of knowledge will run into pieces of writings that confuse them. It is super important to reread statements, use prior schemata, and put things into your own words. Doing this will make you better at retaining knowledge of the text you read, so just jump right into your text.

Why Blogs Have Overrun Newspaper

I remember back to when I was anywhere from nine to fifteen years old. My father would always be reading the newspaper on Sunday mornings. I would sometimes ask what he was reading about, so he would explain to me things about taxes or the new project to repair the roads in our small town. None of those things ever interested me because what kind of young teenager ever cared about things that did not interest them. That is where the new world of blogging comes into play. Blogs have such a variety of topics that would apply to many different ages and cultures of people around the world.

I do not like to read, if I am going to be honest, but there are some things that I love to read about when I get my hands on the right topic. One topic that I enjoy reading about is sports. They have always been a huge part of my life from a young age. As I go through the web now I can find all sorts of articles that write about sports. If I would have had access to articles like these when I was young I know for a fact that I would read them just like my dad did with the newspaper.

In today’s world many more kids have access to blogs then when i was young. Newspapers are still around today and serve good purpose to those who choose to read them. Blogs have become like a massive newspaper for kids like me and all other ages. I can literally go on the web and type “blogs about sports nutrition” within seconds so many articles will be presented before my eyes. Some may be popular writers and some may be just enthuseiastic teenages writing about how little they know. There are many different cultures and beliefs in this world that instead of reading your county’s newspaper you can read about events and beliefs that are happening all across the world.

The paper world may be getting taken over by blogging, but that should not be the main mission for the tech world. What we read about at the beginning of our blogging experience, google might be making us stupid, so our world should be sure to keep a good balance between the two ways of reading. I do believe that the older way of doing things, without technology makes humans much more mentally strong. Now there might not be many stats that today’s technology world is really making us mentally weak, but what we are doing, is different and some people are starting to realize a difference in mental thoughts.

I believe the blogging world is connecting people from huge parts of this world to the smallest parts all around. Kids can read about all sorts of sports from different countries and learn how to play them along with keeping up with how their teams are doing through updates in blogs from the people in that specific sport. This does not just go for sports either anyone who doesn’t like to read will surely find something in their interest within a couple seconds on the web.
